In advance of the 2 PM Sunday, March 15 performance of Handel’s 1739 oratorio, “Israel in Egypt” in UCLA’s Royce Hall, please join us online at 10 AM Thursday, March 12 for a Milken Center panel discussion titled Faith, Frogs and the Sublime: Understanding Handel’s “Israel in Egypt.” Interspersing recorded portions of the work with our discussion, we’ll explore its unique soundworld (including its monumental choral writing and wildly colorful portrayals of the Ten Plagues), the theological resonances of its Biblical texts and its impact on London audiences of the time. UCLA Director of Orchestral Studies Neal Stulberg will be joined on the panel by UCLA Director of Choral Studies and Music Performance, Education and Composition Department Chair James Bass, and the distinguished British Handel scholar Ruth Smith. Milken Center Director and UCLA Mickey Katz Chair in Jewish Music Professor Mark Kligman will moderate.
