Golden Thread Ensemble is a pioneering new chamber-klezmer group led by Craig Judelman, featuring The Klezmatics’ frontman Lorin Sklamberg, Latvian chanteuse Sasha Lurje and a virtuosic string quintet made up of leading klezmer musicians. Combining a deep grounding in klezmer, Yiddish theater, classical and contemporary art music, this new project has already received rave reviews at North America’s premiere klezmer festivals for its program celebrating the power of music to carry and communicate the human experience, and its critical role in the important struggles for improvements in the living and working conditions for millions of people over the last 150 years.
This event is made possible by the Lowell Milken Center for Music of American Jewish Experience at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music.
Featured Musicians:
LA-native Lorin Sklamberg has earned a Grammy for his work with the Klezmatics while also composing and collaborating in numerous other projects, working with such luminaries as Itzhak Perlman, Chava Alberstein and Susan McKeown. When he’s not on stage he can be found digging for treasures at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York where he works as the sound archivist.
Sasha Lurje was born in Riga, Latvia and has spent her life researching, performing and teaching Yiddish culture. Her projects include Yiddish progressive rock band Forshpil, Semer Ensemble, numerous cabaret projects.
Craig Judelman is highly regarded as a fiddler, composer, and educator on both sides of the Atlantic. Since moving to Berlin in 2017 he has developed a singular voice in the klezmer scene, recording and performing with leaders of klezmer and American folk music including John Cohen, Peter Stampfel and Michael Alpert.
